Chris played an all-too-short opening set (the feature act was some singer/songwriter duo) and gave a *sparsely* attend workshop. Poor promotion, I suppose, netted only two souls - a beginning fingerpicker and me. To his credit, Chris multitasked quite well. 8-) The set was primarily tunes from 1994's TRAVELOUGE, which suited me fine. These are, IMHO, Chris' most skilled compositions. You can really hear Chris mature as a composer by listening to 1982's RUNOFF and TRAVELOUGE back-to-back. Which is not to say that RUNOFF doesn't have it's share of nice tunes. "An Introspection" is part of my repertory. I spoke with Chris primarily about composing and he stressed the need for documentation. Inspiration, if it comes, according to Chris, is in 10 second snippets. These should be jotted down on paper or tape for a time when you are ready to sit down and be a musical craftsman. It is recommended to compose away from the guitar. Much to my surprise, and delight, the E-bow work on TRAVELOUGE is *not* double tracked! While cradling the E-bow with his right hand fingers, Chris is able to pick accompaniment with his rh thumb. He also makes use of lh hammers and pull offs. Very nice effect. FYI - the E-bow works on unamplified acoustic guitars. There was a thread a while back on this on the builders newsgroup. aLaska Piks were used and Chris acknowledged that while they are great for someone who was constrained by conventional fingerpicks, they might feel limiting to someone who is used to playing with their fingernails. The latter was my experience. I heard some DADGAD and double drop D (DADGBD). Most tunes were in standard (!) with a modified Schubb capo. Chris hacked the Schubb so that it frets only the 5, 4 and 3 strings. When placed on the second fret, you get an Esus4. "Moutaineering Creek" and the Irish medley from TRAVELOUGE were played this way. Taylor guitars, a soundhole pickup and a transducer (not the saddle kind) and some rack equipment (Rane?) comprised the setup. I know ---> <--- this much about electronics, so I didn't ask any questions. For folks in the area, Chris will be doing a seminar tomorrow (tuesday) night at Brian Guitars in New Haven. A few other dates in the Northeast as well. Friday night in Worcester, MA, I believe. For folks out of the area - well, I have no sympathy for my UK friends who get to hear Bert Jansch play pub gigs or John Renbourn concertize. ;-) One last thing - amused as he was with my tales of cyberspace, Chris feels his time is better spent playing the guitar.
